Lana Del Rey Fires Back at Critics Who Say She 'Glamorizes Abuse'

Lana Del Rey ignited a bit of a firestorm after penning an open letter about how she’s criticized by the media for glamorizing abuse in her music while other female pop stars, ranging from Ariana Grande to Beyoncé, have #1 hit songs about being sexy or unfaithful.

“I'm just fed up with female writers saying I glamorize abuse when in reality I’m just a glamorous person singing about the realities of what we are all now seeing - emotionally-abusive relationships are all over the world," Lana shared in her open letter. "I’ve been honest and optimistic about challenging relationships I’ve had and those were sadly my experiences while those records were made.”

On Twitter, some weren't happy with Lana’s letter while others were quick to defend what she wrote.

The singer later shared a video to her Instagram page, captioned, "Nobody gets to tell your story."

"I just want to remind you that in that post, my one and only personal declaration I’ve ever made -- thanks for being so warm and welcoming -- was about the need for fragility in the feminist movement," she explained in the clip. "When I mentioned women who look like, I didn’t mean white like me. I mean the kind of women who, you know, other people might not believe because they think 'Oh, well look at her she f--ing deserves it' or whatever."

Amidst it all, Lana did give fans an exciting update: her new album will be out September 5! Read her letter in full above.
