Locals in Venice, Italy, were shocked when two American tourists stripped off their clothes and jumped into the city's iconic canals. The pair swam in the water for about five minutes before toweling off and returning to their Airbnb in the residential district of Castello.

According to CNN, locals said that several nearby houses drain their sewage into the canal where the Americans decided to go skinny dipping.

Authorities are reviewing security camera footage from the area, trying to track down the pair of tourists.

Venice has been dealing with unruly and rowdy tourists ever since the city reopened to visitors following the coronavirus pandemic. The city has been hit with a string of vandalisms in the past few weeks, with vandals targeting historic churches and landmarks across the city. In one instance, a street artist painted a pink box with an equation on a statue of St. Francis of Assisi.

When a local tried to remove the paint, they made it worse. The government has hired professional art restorers to repair the damage.

City officials hoped to tackle the issue of overtourism by charging a $5-$10 "tourist tax" but decided to hold off on imposing the fee until 2023.
